This family-owned establishment has earned a loyal following over the years, and once you visit, it’s easy to see why.
Authentic Salvadoran Flavors
At the heart of Dona Bessy Pupuseria is its signature dish: the pupusa. A pupusa is a thick, handmade corn tortilla filled with a variety of delicious ingredients such as cheese, beans, pork, chicken, or a combination of these. The restaurant offers a wide range of pupusas to choose from, so there's something for everyone—whether you're a fan of the classic cheese and bean combination or prefer something more adventurous, like the revuelta (a mix of pork, beans, and cheese).
But pupusas aren’t the only thing that shines at Dona Bessy. The menu also features other traditional Salvadoran dishes like yuca frita (fried cassava), tamales, and sopa de res (beef soup). These hearty dishes are crafted using fresh, high-quality ingredients that bring authentic Salvadoran flavors to life.

From the moment you step inside, the smell of freshly made pupusas fills the air, creating a sense of anticipation. You’ll likely hear lively conversations and laughter around the room, contributing to the warm, family-oriented environment.
The best part? You can watch the cooks prepare your pupusas right in front of you, adding a unique, interactive element to your meal. It’s a great way to see the craftsmanship behind the food and learn more about the Salvadoran tradition of making pupusas by hand.
High-Quality Ingredients and Freshness
When it comes to food, quality is key at Dona Bessy Pupuseria. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create every dish. From the tortillas to the fillings, everything is made with care and attention to detail. Whether it’s the creamy cheese, savory pork, or perfectly cooked vegetables, the flavors at Dona Bessy Pupuseria speak for themselves.
The Menu: Something for Everyone
While pupusas are the star of the show, Dona Bessy Pupuseria offers much more. The yuca frita, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, pairs perfectly with a tangy salsa or fresh guacamole. If you’re looking for something light yet satisfying, the tamales are a great choice—they’re rich, flavorful, and packed with filling. For those craving something more hearty, the sopa de res is a comforting beef soup that will warm you from the inside out.
Dona Bessy also offers a variety of beverages to complement your meal, including traditional horchata, a sweet rice drink, and fresh fruit juices like mango or pineapple. These refreshing drinks are the perfect way to wash down a delicious pupusa.
Reviews
This place was a wow! The pupusas were perfection. Our server was sweet and did great with us. The epanadas are sweet plantains filled with beans or dessert cheese. The jamaica was very tasty. I am looking forward to returning.
I have been going to Dona Bessy here in Gaithersburg, Maryland for many years. I used to manage Restaurants for over 10 years. The employees are very nice and the food is wonderful. This is one of the best Salvadorian restaurants in Maryland.
Delicious and affordable! Some coworkers and I picked up lunch to bring back to work (hence the hideous fluorescent lighting pictures, haha). Between all of us we shared pupusas, enchiladas, and plantains. Favorites among us were the bean and cheese pupusas and the carne asada enchilada. All super yummy and affordable. Can't wait to go back soon!
I'm not much of a pork eater, but the chicaron y frijole pupusas are wonderful. If they had more options without cheese, I'd visit a lit more. Fairly priced as well.
